Company: Gooding & Co.
Location: Pebble Beach, CA
Date: August 13, 2008
Sold at: $1,485,000

327-ci 360-hp fuel-injected V8, 4-sp. A true RPO 687 fuelie, delivered to Yenko's dealership for the Gulf Oil racing team. Prepared and successfully raced, first place in the 1962 SCCA A-Production Championship. Dismantled and sold in 1963 as a street car, college student's daily driver in the ’80s. Rediscovered and restored with original parts, including Motorola 2-way radio, Stewart-Warner gauges, and roll cage. First car to receive the NCRS American Heritage Award, 2005 Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame.

Sold above the high estimate of $1.2m. This is truly an important car within American racing history, and with so many original components fitted, it's safe to say there's nothing else quite like it. Well sold at this price, but the new owner should have no complaints.

4. 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Greenwood Racer
Company: Bonhams
Location: Carmel, CA
Date: August 19, 2005
Sold at: $566,000

Good, used race car condition throughout; original style graphics. Restored with all surviving original components, including the front fenders, headlights and race seat.

John Greenwood 1974-75 Sebring Corvette. Extensive, documented IMSA history at Sebring, Riverside, Daytona and elsewhere. Now re-assembled and restored to as raced condition and specs. Loud and very in-your-face. Even the low estimate of $700k seemed high for this one, but the final bid priced it properly.

5. 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Gulf Oil race car
Company: RM Auctions
Location: Monterey, CA
Date: August 12, 2004
Sold at: $467,500

327-ci V8, FI, 4-sp. Very good panelwork with equally good paint over fair fiberglass. Paint crazed from knock on rear left wheel flare. Aluminum console knocked loose. Inevitable scratches in side window Plexiglas. Well-presented engine and undercarriage.

Wonderful racing history through the early '60s and one of the biggest-muscled Corvettes--a Cobra killer. In amazingly good condition considering its tough life. An expensive Vette, but hey, there aren't many Vettes more desirable.

6. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster
Company: RM Auctions
Location: Monterey, CA
Date: August 14, 1998
Sold at: $321,000

"One of 20 1967 L88s. 4-speed, P/B, steel wheels, radio/heater delete. Meticulously restored to pristine condtion, claimed all correct and numbers matching."

"Rated at 430hp, the huge 4 barrel on the L88's free breathing aluminum heads really produced at least 500. The most valuable Corvette ever built; the price is appropriate to today's market, and the car will appreciate at the pointy-end of the market.

7. 1984 Lola Corvette IMSA GTP racer
Company: Russo and Steele
Location: Monterey, CA
Date: August 17, 2007
Sold at: $269,500

Far better condition than most period racecars, this #2 of 7 total produced Lola long-tail GTP Corvette is still race-ready. Run at Daytona 1985 for the 24-Hour. Recent tech stickers, well-used slicks mounted on car for auction. Interior as-expected for a big-bore IMSA GTP car. Engine freshly overhauled with forged pistons, rods and crank having been run only 5.5 hours; work performed by Ted Wentz of Marcovicci & Wentz.

A good sale all around; the recent engine build by Wentz added some value as well as the recent documented tech and use. Drew Alcazar and his helpers pushed the car into a row of chairs as they got it headed towards the block, but no damage was done. When the bidding reached $245,000 and it seemed like it would come to a stop, the reserve was pulled. A fair deal for both parties.
